São Paulo – This Friday (15) in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, the Fencing World Championship will begin, featuring 20 Brazilians among the competitors. According to information released by the Brazilian Fencing Confederation (CBE), Brazil will participate in men’s and women’s singles and teams contests with the three weapons: foil, épée, and sabre.
This will be the first world competition after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and will take place in Egypt for nine days until July 23. The last edition, in 2019, took place in Budapest, Hungary, and Brazilian Nathalie Moellhausen (pictured above) won the épée world title, unprecedented in national fencing. Other athletes, such as Guilherme Toldo, also stood out in the competition.
In addition to renowned athletes, Brazil will take young talents to Cairo. Nathalie Moellhausen, Victória Vizeu, Ginevra Giordano, and Mariana Correia will participate in women’s épée; and Alexandre Camargo in the men’s. Bia Bulcão, Mariana Pistoia, Rafaella Gomes, and Ana Toldo will compete in the women’s foil; and Guilherme Toldo, Paulo Morais, Ricardo Pacheco, and Lorenzo Mion in the men’s foil. Luana Pekelman, Pietra Chierighini, Isabela Carvalho, and Giulia Gasparin will be in the women’s sabre, and Bruno Pekelman, Rafael Lee, and Renato Saliba in the men’s.
Brazil will also be in contention in five of the six team tournaments of the World Championship in Egypt. With the exception of the men’s épée, Brazilians will compete in all weapons and classes: Women’s épée; men’s foil, women’s foil, men’s sabre, and women’s sabre.
